ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw more coronavirus cases in the last week than it has experienced in a single week since January, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city had seen 5,385 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 124 from a week before. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced an increase of 62 new cases. In early January, Elmhurst saw a weekly total of 174 new coronavirus cases. The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst stayed the same in the last week, at 71. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.3 percent. The figure compares to 97 in Darien, 112 in DuPage County, 113 in Hinsdale, 115 La Grange Park, 121 in Clarendon Hills and La Grange, and 125 in Western Springs and suburban Cook County. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,763,866, a 1.3 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 26,227. Nationally, 46.6 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 1.4 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 770,461 people have died from the virus in the United States.
