CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has used a police chopper for years, but the latest version of "Snoopy" has new technology helping the department in cases where a helicopter is helpful in an investigation.
"Snoopy" was delivered in September; however, it took time to outfit it with the new tech and get it ready to use in the field.
In a press release, CMPD released numbers from the week of Nov. 7-13, citing a response to 48 total calls, 20 immediate arrests and six assisted arrests. "Snoopy" also helped recover two stolen vehicles.
The chopper was used on Nov. 13 in a case on North Tryon in which police on the ground lost track of two suspects, per CMPD. Using infrared technology on "Snoopy," the two suspects were found and arrested.
Just two law enforcement agencies in North Carolina use a helicopter in police investigations.
