WEST ISLIP, NY — One person died and five people were injured in a two-car crash involving a driver charged with driving while intoxicated Sunday night, New York State police said.
Michael Lupo, 23, of North Babylon, was driving a Dodge Charger south on Robert Moses Causeway near West Islip at about 7:34 p.m., when he collided with a Ford Focus, causing the Dodge to overturn, police said.
One passenger in the Dodge was taken to a nearby hospital and later died of injuries, police said. Three other passengers in the Dodge were also treated at a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The driver and a passenger in the Ford were also taken to a nearby hospital for non-threatening life injuries, police said.
Lupo was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at Suffolk County First District Court, police said.
The crash is still under investigation. State police ask that any witnesses or anyone with information call 631-756-3300.
