Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Kathy Cioffi, your host of the Atlanta Daily. First, today's weather: Mostly sunny and cool. High: 55 Low: 33. Here are the top stories in Atlanta today: Iman Shumpert, former Georgia Tech standout who won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers, now has another trophy to add to his collection: the "Dancing with the Stars" mirrorball. Shumpert, among the last four contestants on Monday's "Dancing With the Stars" finale, defeated YouTube personality JoJo Siwa, "The Talk" co-host Amanda Kloots and Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby to succeed Kaitlyn Bristowe as the show's champion. As was the case with Rigsby, the NBA player never once found himself in jeopardy of going home, thanks to his partner Daniella Karagach's choreographed routines that played to his physical strength and likable personality. In the end of the competition series' 30th season, it was Shumpert and Karagach clutching the Mirrorball trophy and showered with confetti. (UsMagazine.com)Atlanta is one of just five U.S. destinations to make National Geographic's list of the 25 best places in the world to visit for history and culture in 2022. The list, created in collaboration with National Geographic "Traveler's" international editorial teams from over a dozen offices around the world, cited Atlanta's reputation for social activism, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, several popular Black-owned businesses, and the BeltLine - connecting neighborhoods to nightlife and restaurants in Midtown and Old Fourth Ward. Each year, National Geographic spotlights cities across the globe that are remarkable for travelers for nature, adventure, culture, sustainability and family. (FOX 5 Atlanta)Sculptor Kevin Box's "Conversation Peace," recently installed at 10th and Peachtree streets, is the latest in Midtown Alliance's series of temporary public art installations to grace the corner. Temporary installations are a key focus of Midtown Alliance, a nonprofit organization established in 1978 to help revitalize Midtown. "Conversation Peace," a play on the phrase referring to an object that inspires conversation, is a sculptural interpretation of the game rock-paper-scissors. Box said he used these objects to symbolize conflicting forces that have found balance, with "paper" winning the game by folding itself into a paper crane, an international symbol of peace. The sculpture, which will be on view until the summer of 2023, is one of more than 40 public art installations in the 1.2 square-mile Midtown district. (SaportaReport)If you're planning to do some holiday shopping after polishing off the turkey and dressing on Thanksgiving, be warned: Not all of your favorite retailers will be open this year. Walmart, Target and Costco are among the growing number of retailers that have started closing stores on the holiday. While a number of retailers will be open, it's always a good idea to check local store hours before packing away the Thanksgiving leftovers and heading out to get a jump on Black Friday deals. (Atlanta Patch)This year's 32 Americans chosen as Rhodes Scholars includes a U.S. Naval Academy student from Atlanta, Sarah A. Skinner. A senior at the United States Naval Academy, Skinner is a 2018 graduate of Marist School in Brookhaven. An honors political science major with a Chinese minor, Skinner plans to pursue a master of philosophy in international relations when she heads to England's University of Oxford next October, after which she will continue her naval service in the surface warfare community. The 2022 class of U.S. Rhodes scholars includes the largest number of women ever selected for the scholarship in one year, according to a Rhodes Trust announcement Sunday.
