For the United States, 2021 has been the deadliest year on record for transgender people, with 47 recorded homicides. Alexandra Gray, a Des Moines resident who identifies as transgender, told We Are Iowa that she personally knew multiple trans women who have died due to anti-trans violence, and she took Saturday to remember their bravery and celebrate their memories. (We Are Iowa)Residents who visit the numerous new shops and restaurants that have sprung up in downtown Des Moines over the past decade are frustrated by the lingering stench from the nearby animal processing plants, including pork processor Pine Ridge Farms and rendering plant Darling Ingredients. After decades of downplaying or ignoring the problem, Des Moines officials recently began a comprehensive study that will lead to tighter regulations on some local manufacturing plants and reduce the air and odor pollution in the area. The city agrees there's a problem but says they need more data before deciding what to do.
