Learn about native plants in NW Bexar County. Do you want to know more about the Native Plants in NW Bexar County? If so, please join us for a fairly easy hike (about 1.5 miles round trip) over gentle terrain. We will discuss how local geology has contributed to the extensive biodiversity across the region and how the resulting plant life encouraged Native Americans and European settlers to live here. We will explore up to 30 native Texas plants (season dependent) and discuss how they support favorable habitats. Who is Invited: Open to all ages; minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Registration/reservations required! Sorry, no group registrations. When & Where to Meet: Arrive no later than 8:45AM. Meet at the Visitor Center by the rainwater harvesting tower. The Natural Area front gates open at 7:00AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 8:45AM. The hike starts promptly at 9:00AM. What to Wear & Bring: Dress for hiking outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails; bring at least two liters of water PER PERSON and a snack. Requirements: Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Participants must be able to hike approximately 1.5 miles round trip over gentle terrain. Registration, Fees & Cancellation: Registration is required for this hike. Group size is limited to the first 10 that register. Natural Area entry fees apply. This hike is subject to cancellation. Friends of Government Canyon is made up of a growing group of active volunteers who take pride in the work we do — from grooming trails to facilitating education programs to advocating the protection of the Aquifer and numerous resources found within the boundaries of the Natural Area. We are hikers, naturalists, artists, mountain bikers, runners, researchers, clean water advocates and in general, lovers of the outdoors with one common mission; protecting and preserving the Natural Area.
