The Arctic rough-legged hawk and snowy white owl make the long journey south for milder winters. We may not think of New Hampshire winters as mild, but they are compared to below-freezing temperatures in northern Alaska and northern parts of Canada. The majestic rough-leg hawks get their name because their legs are covered with feathers to protect them from the cold. These unique hawks face headwinds so they appear to be floating in the air, also called "kiting." Snowy owls, our other arctic guests, are always a welcome sight. Both of these winter travelers need their space to survive, so if you see one of these majestic birds in the fields and farms Bedford, in marshes along the seacoast, or anywhere else in New Hampshire, please keep a distance. They are likely weary from their long journey south. (NHPR)A Bedford, New Hampshire man, Jason Riddle, pleaded guilty to two federal charges for his role in the January 6 riots when he appeared before a federal judge on Thursday. The first charge was for stealing items from the parliamentarian's office. The second charge was for breaching the Capitol building. Both are federal crimes. (WMUR)A maple syrup shortage this year was narrowly avoided thanks to what some are calling "the OPEC" of maple syrup. The Quebec Maple Syrup Producers said it will draw nearly 50 million pounds of stored maple syrup from barrels in its strategic reserve to make up for the loss in supply this year. The amount they will tap is more than a third of this year's entire harvest. The French-speaking province of Quebec is the world's largest supplier of maple syrup. They produce 70% of the world's maple syrup supply. Officials said the syrup shortage was partly due to a warmer and shorter spring harvest, and sharp increase in overseas demand. "We need to produce more maple syrup," said spokeswoman Helene Normandin. Thanks to the reserve "OPEC" supply, maple syrup lovers from Bedford, New Hampshire, to Bedford, England, will be able to our maple syrup on their morning pancakes.
