Happy Sunday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note. First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy. High: 64 Low: 52. Here are the top stories today in Atlanta: Reports of a possible active shooter at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Saturday afternoon instead proved to be a weapon that was accidentally discharged at a main security checkpoint. Airport officials as well as Atlanta police confirmed the "accidental discharge of a firearm" that nevertheless prompted widespread panic and a brief halt of departing flights. "There is not an active shooter," the airport announced in a tweet. "There was an accidental discharge at the airport. There is no danger to passengers or employees. An investigation is ongoing." (Atlanta Patch) Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore released a statement Friday afternoon expressing disappointment with the verdict delivered in the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse. "Justice has not been served, it has been denied," the Atlanta mayoral candidate said in her note, which offered sympathy for the victims. Later that night, however, the statement was removed from Moore's social media channels after heated comments turned personal. "I removed the post after seeing how people were attacking EACH OTHER in the comments," Moore wrote in explanation. "As a leader, I seek to UNITE and I do not want a space I create to be used as a tool for people to attack one another." (The Atlanta Voice) A major accident early Saturday morning shut down all lanes of I-285 North, south of I-20 on the Westside. The accident, which occurred around 3:30 a.m., also closed at least two of the southbound lanes. According to the Georgia State Patrol, a box truck rolled over, damaging the barrier wall. Details about the wreck, including how many vehicles were involved and possible injuries, were not immediately released. (WSB Atlanta) The family of a child who was allegedly sexually abused at a church summer camp filed a lawsuit Friday against the West End Family Life and Community Center. The suit claims an employee of the facility "repeatedly raped and sexually abused" the child throughout June to July 2018 during Bible camp, when the girl was just 9 years old. In March, a camp counselor accused of sexually abusing several young children under the age of 12 was arrested by the Atlanta Police Department's Special Victims Unit. The suspect, who wasn't named in order to protect the victims' identities, worked as a camp counselor at the West End Family Life and Community Center Camp, also known as the West End Center Camp, during the summers of 2016, 2017 and 2018, said Sgt. Felicia Claxton, who heads the APD SVU. (FOX 5 Atlanta) According to reports filed with local police departments, at least 300 patients over the last three years have claimed they had valuables stolen during their stays at Atlanta-area hospitals. The items ranged from electronics - cell phones, iPads and laptops – to jewelry and driver's licenses, though a number of parked cars were broken into and, in several cases, guns were stolen out of glove boxes. Of the 311 thefts reported, 182 took place in Atlanta hospitals. "Most of these are crimes of opportunity," said Paul Sarnese, president of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety, an organization dedicated to professionals involved in managing security and safety programs in healthcare facilities. (Facebook)Atlanta Humane Society: "It's Tripp Day! 🎉 We figured this pup deserves his own day not just because he's cute (I mean, come onnn! 😍), but because he's a long-time resident of the shelter. This is unbelievable to those of us who know and love him! Tripp is a fun-loving 3-year-old dog with lots of energy and affection. He's very sociable with those he trusts, and is an expert at being chill after all his energy is out. He loves rolling on his back for belly rubs and playing in the backyard (which should have a very tall fence - he's an escape artist!). Could Tripp be your best pal?
