Description

The Arizona Winds prepares for “The Joy of the Season” Christmas concert The Arizona Winds, one of the oldest and most highly acclaimed performing groups in Greater Phoenix, just completed its first concert of the 2021-2022 season before a crowd of over 900 patrons in the band’s new venue, The Vista Center for the Arts in Surprise. After more than a 20-month Covid-induced hiatus, patrons were thrilled to have the band back on stage. One couple who attended the band’s October 17th concert summed up what everyone in attendance seemed to enthusiastically express by their standing ovation: “We thoroughly enjoyed your program yesterday! Thank you very much to all for your volunteer hours”, wrote Carolyn & Ray Murphy of Sun City West. The band continues its tradition of great, admission-free entertainment on Sunday, December 12th, presenting its holiday concert, “The Joy of the Season”, at the Vista Center for the Arts. Admission is free and no tickets are required. There is no reserved seating so come early! Those that have enjoyed the Arizona Winds’ Christmas concerts in previous years will tell you that the band does not disappoint when it comes to putting its many enthusiasts in the holiday spirit. The program always includes new arrangements of many of everyone’s favorite Christmas tunes like Greensleeves, Deck the Halls, Away in a Manger, and Jingle Bells, but Colonel Shelton, Music Director and Conductor, always seems to find something unique that inspires and entertains beyond the ordinary. And, as in years past, Colonel Shelton selects a young audience member to conclude the program by conducting an audience favorite, Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride. Mark your calendars and be sure to put this concert on your “must see” list for the holidays! Arizona Winds concerts are held at 3:00 p.m. at the Vista Center for the Arts, 15802 N. Parkview Place, Surprise. Doors open at 2:15. For further information about the band’s season, or to contribute to its operating fund, visit the band’s website at www.azwinds.com and also Facebook and YouTube. The Arizona Winds celebrated their 40th year in 2014 as a West Valley cultural institution.  The band’s musicians, comprised of adults from across the Valley of the Sun and representing numerous professions from music educators to engineers, homemakers to landscape contractors, continue the tradition of sharing their love of music and enriching the lives of thousands of patrons throughout the state of Arizona each year.  Over the years, many well known music industry personalities have guest conducted the Arizona Winds to include Geoffrey Brand of the London Wind Ensemble, A.S.C.A.P. composer William H. Hill, Arizona State University Director of Bands (ret.) Dr. Richard Strange, past Northern Arizona University Director of Bands Dr. Patricia Hoy, retired Northern Arizona University Director of Bands Dr. Donald Wolf and Col. John R. Bourgeois (USMC, Ret.) of the world renowned ‘Presidents Own’ US Marine Corp Band from Washington D.C. The Arizona Winds is a 501C(3) non-profit organization which presents a series of six free concerts each season and depends entirely upon the generous tax-deductible contributions of its patrons to sustain the level of quality performances thousands have enjoyed.
