CAMBRIDGE, MA — Cambridge police say they peacefully resolved a standoff with a barricaded suspect early Friday morning. The suspect, whom police say they feared was holding someone hostage and had access to a gun, is in custody. Later reports showed that no one else was inside the home.
Police said on Twitter that they initially responded to reports of gunshots at Schiarappa Street, between Charles and Spring streets north of Kendall Square, just after 2 a.m. Friday. A suspect was observed entering the apartment where the barricade took place. A firearm was reportedly recovered outside the residence inside a vehicle.
Crisis negotiators were brought in to resolve what police called an "active barricade situation." At around 5:45 a.m., police advised the public to avoid the area, and nearby residents to shelter in place.
Police said the standoff was "peacefully resolved" at around 6:40 a.m. when the suspect was taken into custody. There were no other occupants of the building.
