MIDDLETOWN, CT — A man has been taken into custody in connection with an investigation of stolen guns in Middletown, according to police. The Middletown Police Department's SWAT Team, police negotiators and detectives from the Major Investigations Unit responded to a home in the 100 block of Newfield Street around 3:20 p.m. on Friday, according to Lt. Brian Hubbs. Hubbs said detectives obtained a search-and-seizure warrant for the home of 49-year-old Matthew Springman in connection with an ongoing "theft of firearms investigation." "Springman was suspected of stealing a number of firearms from another residence in our community," Hubbs wrote in a news release. "The area of Newfield Street was temporarily blocked for the safety of our community but Springman exited his home and peacefully surrendered without incident." Hubbs said the road has been reopened and police remained at the scene to complete their search of the home. "Multiple firearms have already been recovered from Springman's home however this case remains an active investigation," Hubbs said. Springman was taken into custody on two outstanding re-arrest warrants for second-degree failure to appear. More charges are expected at the conclusion of the investigation, according to Hubbs.
