Here are the top stories today in San Diego: A proposed ballot initiative launched this week seeks to invest in San Diego's public facilities to increase educational and recreational opportunities in some of the city's underserved neighborhoods. The effort to put the "Libraries and Parks For All" community initiative on the November 2022 ballot is being spearheaded by the San Diego Public Library Foundation and the San Diego Parks Foundation. (City News Service)The San Diego Seniors Community Foundation awarded grants to 26 local nonprofit organizations intended to support more than 4,000 socially isolated seniors throughout the region. The grant program, in its second year, is funded through SDSCF's No Senior Alone Matching Holiday Challenge — an ongoing fundraising campaign that hopes to double the amount raised in 2021 to $100,000. (City News Service)CVS Health will close 900 stores over the next three years, beginning in the spring of 2022 in response to changes in shopping habits, population shifts and changing health care needs. The closings will take place over the next three years, according to the company. The company did not say which stores it would close or which states would be most affected by the closures. CVS has about 10,104 stores, including a number of stores in San Diego County. (San Diego Patch)San Diego County supervisors were told this week that plans to reduce the region's carbon emissions to zero by 2035 are achievable, but will require collaboration between local governments and multiple agencies. After hearing from the public, board Chairman Nathan Fletcher reminded people that the San Diego Regional Decarbonization Framework is a first draft and the county has "many, many months ahead" before passing any formal plan. (City News Service)The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to direct the Department of Parks and Recreation to work with outside agencies to keep regional lakes and reservoirs indefinitely open for recreational activities. Supervisor Joel Anderson, who made the proposal, said keeping such resources open "is vital to the health and wellness of those who live in the Back Country."
