Press release from the Village of Montgomery: November 18, 2021 Montgomery, IL – The Montgomery Police Department, in conjunction with the Kane County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Management, will offer free classes in Emergency and Disaster Preparedness geared towards children from kindergarten through 8th Grade. These classes will be taught and facilitated by experienced members of the Kane County Emergency Management Team and coordinated by the Montgomery Police Department Staff. "We want children to feel safe and empower them in an age-appropriate, fun, and educational way to build confidence and be prepared," says Commander Liz Palko. Following the class sessions, each specifically geared to age-level (K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th), kids will get a behind-the-scenes tour of the police department building. The classes will take place at the Montgomery Police Department (10 Civic Center Drive, Montgomery) and will cover various topics such as first aid and emergency and disaster preparedness. Each participant will receive a Go Bag as well. "Kids who are educated, confident, and prepared become the resourceful adults of the future," says Commander Palko. Students will learn about the difference between an emergency, a disaster, and a hazard, First Aid/CPR, phoning for help, when to call 911, the importance of handwashing, disaster supply kits, and what to do during severe weather. Advanced registration is required and available through the third-party website Eventbrite.com. This class is open to not only Montgomery residents but Kane County residents as well.
