CONCORD, NH — Due to increased home heating oil prices, the state is raising the benefit for the New Hampshire Fuel Assistance Program. Gov. Chris Sununu made the announcement Thursday stating benefits will range from $253 to $2,520 — up from $158 to $1,575 last winter. The decision was made after highly inflated national energy costs and in consultation with the new New Hampshire Department of Energy. "Increased energy costs represent a heavy burden for all Granite Staters, especially for low-income households," Interim Energy Commissioner Jared Chicoine said. "In light of the growing national inflation and dramatic projected increases in heating fuels, the New Hampshire Department of Energy is increasing the benefit ranges for the Fuel Assistance Program. This benefit increase will help make sure that low-income Granite Staters can keep their homes warm this winter." Qualifying households will receive grants based on a number of factors including income, household size, housing type, and fuel type. Most households making up to 60 percent of the state median income qualify. "Ensuring Granite Staters can keep warm this winter is among the most pressing issues facing our state," Sununu said. "Due to a nationwide spike in energy prices, we are taking steps to help those in need. If you are struggling to pay for home heating costs or know someone who is, help is just a phone call away." NH Is Dependent On Federal Funding An updated MoneyGeek.com study shows New Hampshire is dependent on federal funding — but below the average when compared to all states. New Hampshire ranks No. 32 in federal fund need while receiving $1.34 for ever $1 paid in taxes. Only about 18 percent of the state's revenue come from federal funding. A analysis of the child tax credit shows that while the state will receive $634 million, it amounts to only $476 per capita, or 45th in the United States, due to the aging population demographic of the Granite State.
