Baby Dolphin Plays Off Victoria Beach: Patch Photo Of The Week

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — It's a different view of Victoria Beach's infamous Pirates Tower, taken by resident photographer Rich German. German goes out on his paddleboard every day. With his recording devices in tow, he observes the shoreline from the water and keeps his eyes trained for marine life. He shares his daily outings with friends and fans over social media, like this amazing picture of a baby dolphin and its mother off Victoria Beach. "The ocean conditions have been incredible and so have the dolphins," he shared over Instagram in a recent post. "Say hi to TWO brand new babies in the Laguna family." According to German, the baby common dolphins are both less than a week old. "If you look close you can see their fetal folds which go away after a week," he said. The babies kept "popping their little heads out of the water" to take a look above the surface, he shared in his post. German shared his picture with Patch, telling us, "there is nothing cuter than a baby dolphin trying to figure out life!" We couldn't agree more. For any history buffs wanting to know about the Victoria Beach Tower, here's how it came to be there, as shared by German: "In 1926 former California state Senator William Edward Brown and his wife, Mary Eleanor built a summer home on the bluffs overlooking Victoria Cove, and to accommodate the sharp drop to the reef below, Senator Brown had a 60-foot Norman-style tower (inspired by a recent trip to France for the war effort) built of reinforced concrete; hidden inside was a spiral staircase that allowed the Brown family to move easily and safely from the top of the bluff to the rocks below.
