DARIEN, IL — The Hinsdale High School District 86 board was warned Thursday about the district's requirement that unvaccinated students get weekly tests for the coronavirus. During public comments, Hinsdale resident Chris Sherpitis said the governor's executive order and the district's executive order are separating society into two groups — the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, or desirables and undesirables. "We all remember what the Nazis did in Germany," said Sherpitis, an engineer. "They stigmatized the Jews. They made them wear stars. The same thing is happening here." He continued, "The divide will destroy our community and our American way of life. I urge you to challenge and resist this in any way you can." Much of the audience applauded. Clarendon Hills resident Kristen Ashby followed Sherpitis to speak. "I would like to second everything the gentleman just said," she said. Ashby said she was disappointed in the district's weekly coronavirus testing, which she called discriminatory. She said the policy violated her child's civil liberties and promoted segregation and intolerance. "Your policy also violates District 86's equity statement," she said. In September, Darien resident Mary O'Dowd, who was carrying an American flag, compared critical race theory to Nazism. Board members have not responded to the Nazi comparisons. Around the country, speakers at school board meetings have been comparing pandemic-related mandates to what Nazis did in the 1930s and 1940s. The Nazis' Holocaust resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews and 5 million others. The Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish organization, has denounced comparisons of vaccine and mask mandates to the Holocaust. Such comparisons, the group says, trivialize the deaths of Holocaust victims.
