WOBURN, MA — Woburn police warned Thursday of reports of a "grandchild in jail" scam in the area.
In this scam, the caller pretends to either be the victim's grandchild, or their attorney. The scammer says the grandchild has been arrested and needs money to get out of jail.
"They will instruct the victim that cash is needed immediately in order for the grandchild to be released," the police said. "They will tell the victim to withdraw a large sum of money from the bank usually over $10,000. The victim will be told a courier will come pick up the cash at their residence."

Anyone who calls over the phone requesting money or gift cards is scamming, the department said.
"Please advise any family members or friends to advise their close ones of this scam," the police said. "If anyone gets a call like this simply hang up the phone. Don't become a victim."
