The Operator’s general area of responsibility includes the operation, maintenance and repair of water and waste water services on Gay & Robinson, Inc. properties. The G&R water system serves approximately 330 homes and businesses in the Kaumakani area. It consists of two source wells, three water tanks and several miles of distribution and transmission lines. Waste water for these facilities are served by cesspools, septic tanks and two wastewater treatment plants. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES The Operator is responsible for the preventative maintenance, repairs, operation and regulatory compliance of water and waste water services. The Operator will work under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager, however the nature of this position requires the Operator to work independently and adjust duties and priorities as conditions dictate. The Operator will also supervise subordinate staff in achieving these duties. Other duties not described herein may be assigned as requested by management. General areas of responsibility for the water system includes maintenance and repairing of; water mains, fire hydrants, pumps, water meters etc. Flushing and disinfecting of mains and reservoirs, keep records, reads and interprets drawings, investigate and resolve complaints, initiates and enforces safety practices, ability to prioritize maintenance and repair schedule, sets up and keeps up‐to‐date maps (as builts) of water system; plans, recommends and directs the preparation of cost estimates for equipment, labor and materials for work orders, job orders, etc., inspection and repair of reservoirs, automatic devices, recording pressure gauges, water level recorders and chlorinators. Responsible for routine compliance water sampling. General areas of responsibility for the waste water system includes operation, maintenance and repairing of; Two Grade II wastewater treatment plants, sewer collection systems, septic tanks and cesspools and associated leach fields. Operates sewer pump truck as required. Conducts routine compliance sampling. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS  Knowledge of: construction methods and equipment, practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution lines and appurtenances; the parts and functions of valves, regulators, fire hydrants, water meters and other appurtenances; sampling and basic laboratory procedures/equipment ; and principles and practices of safety.  Ability to: plan and layout work assignments for crews engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution lines and appurtenances; read and understand plans and specifications; estimate time, labor, material and equipment required for a given project; investigate customer complaints and deal effectively with others; give and follow oral and written instructions: and maintain records and logs.  Possess or ability to attain: - Hawaii State Distribution System Operator II - Hawaii State Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator II - Commercial Driver License  Hawaii State Driver License.  Ability to operate backhoes, skid steers, excavators, and forklifts.  May require work in confined spaces, hot environments and noxious odors.
