Maltin grew up in the first decade of television, watching classic comedy shorts and cartoons and reading everything he could find about them. His fan letters to people he admired led to unexpected correspondence, then to interviews and even friendships. At the age of 13 he met Buster Keaton. At 17, he was hired to produce a reference book that became the renowned Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide. An appearance on the Today show prompted a phone call asking if he’d be willing to audition for a new TV show called Entertainment Tonight. They aired his audition tape and kept him employed for 30 years. As he became a familiar face to millions of viewers he was given access to the brightest stars of Hollywood’s golden age, from Katharine Hepburn to Shirley Temple. He has spent quality time with legends like James Stewart, Elizabeth Taylor, Lena Horne, and Angela Lansbury. He met childhood heroes like Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz and went diving for treasures in the Walt Disney Archives. And for the past 22 years he has taught the most popular course at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, welcoming great filmmakers of the past and present. Yet he still proudly describes himself as a fan. ABOUT THE CLUB: Founded in 1925, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club still thrives with food, friendship, and fun.
