Description

Justice X 2. Thurman, grandson of slaves, ignites sweeping change. Juan Catalan fights arrest for a murder he didn't commit. FIRST Feature: 56 mins. Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story (2019) explores the extraordinary life of a religious leader, born the grandson of slaves, who helped ignite sweeping social change. His landmark book, Jesus and the Disinherited, claimed that Jesus Christ – who was born in poverty as part of a powerless minority – lived a life that spoke directly to Black Americans. Martin Luther King, Jr. not only regularly attended Thurman’s services, but he carried Thurman’s writings with him on the historic marches to Selma and Birmingham. King found Thurman to be a treasure and often drew from him in his own speeches and writings. Congressman John Lewis called Howard Thurman the “patron saint” of the Civil Rights Movement. Jesse Jackson, Congressman John Lewis, Otis Moss, Jr and other leaders in the Civil Rights Movement speak throughout the film about Thurman’s “spirit” being foundational. Actor Keith David voices the words and writings of Howard Thurman. SECOND Feature: 40 mins. Long Shot (2017) When Juan Catalan is arrested for a murder he didn't commit, he builds his case around raw footage from the popular TV show "Curb Your Enthusiasm." As luck would have it, the game was being taped for use in a segment of the HBO entertainment show "Curb Your Enthusiasm". The episode was 'Carpool Lane' and some of the action happened in the same section where Juan was sitting. But Juan still spent 5 months in jail for a crime he didn't commit.
