Description

Birds of America: Exploring the Art of John James Audubon, Winter Bird Migration, & the Annual Christmas Bird Count with the Audubon Society The Miller Special Collections Room at the Billie Jean King Main Library is pleased to announce our next in-person program entitled, "Birds of America: Exploring the Art of John James Audubon, Winter Bird Migrations, & the Annual Christmas Bird Count with the National Audubon Society." Join us on Saturday, December 4 from 3:00-4:45PM for this two-part event -- combining our newly launched Art History Film Series with our Art of Nature Lecture Series! From 3:00- 3:45PM, we'll begin with a short documentary film entitled "John James Audubon: The Birds of America," featuring the life and art of John James Audubon (1785-1851). Audubon's interests in art, ornithology, and natural history turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America. He also "... wrote extensively on nature and the American wilderness. Using quotations from his journals and his original drawings and engravings, this film tells the unique story of Audubon's artistic development and his uncompromising devotion to publishing The Birds of America." (National Gallery of Art) This program is 29 minutes long; narrated by Larry Lewman and directed by Steve York for the National Gallery of Art. From 3:45-4:45PM, the program continues with our Art of Nature Lecture Series, presented by Mary Parsell, president of our local El Dorado Chapter of the National Audubon Society. Join us as we delve further into how Audubon's artistic legacy led to the development of the modern-day National Audubon Society, established many years after his death in 1905. This discussion will explore the Audubon Society's mission of bird conservation, the growth of local chapters across the country (like our El Dorado Audubon chapter here in Long Beach), and how public education efforts and scientific research projects further this mission. Learn more about local area winter bird migrations, bird identification, and citizen science-related activities (like the Annual Christmas Bird Count) that the public can participate in around Long Beach. This event will take place in Meeting Room A (on the 1st floor of the Billie Jean King Main Library) and will have limited seating, so registration is required to attend. The Billie Jean King Main Library is located at 200 W. Broadway, on the corner of Broadway and Pacific. Library parking is available in the structure at Broadway & Chestnut Avenue. With library validation, parking is free for the first 30 minutes and $1.75 for 2 hours; daily maximum is $12. Can't make the event? Please still sign up if you'd like to be added to our email list for advance notification of the Miller Room's upcoming programming. For any other questions, contact Miller Room staff at (562) 570-6729 or by email at [email protected]. Mary Parsell, president of the El Dorado Chapter of the National Audubon Society
