WINTER HAVEN, FL — Peppa Pig Theme Park will be accredited as an autism center to help children with autism have a less overwhelming experience as they visit, Merlin Entertainment said. Peppa Pig has developed a sensitivity guide that explains what each ride will be like to the five senses helping parents decide if it's an emotionally safe option for their children. Extreme sensitivity to touch, light, and sound are autism symptoms, according to webmd.com. Crowds can also cause sensory overload to people with autism. "For some, it may be audio triggers of things that are loud or noisy can be scary," Kelly Hornick, a park spokesperson told WFLA. "Or things that are bright for others and flashing lights may affect visual triggers." Eighty percent of the staff will also be trained to help families who have special needs kids, according to Kelly Hornick, a park spokesperson. LEGOLAND, a park adjacent to Peppa Pig, will also be autism-certified by the The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). LEGOLAND and Peppa Pig share the same parent company, Merlin Entertainment. Peppa Pig Theme Park opens February 2022 in Winter Haven.
