STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Land Conservation Trust recently announced the acquisition of its 47th nature preserve.
The SLCT acquired 7.11 acres of land on North Lake Drive in North Stamford, according to a news release. The area is primarily wetlands; a brook runs through the property, and the edge of a pond sits at the southwest portion.
The land, now called the North Lake Preserve, was donated by Stamford resident, Peter Levine.
"Wetland properties of this size and nature play an important role in the environment. Wetlands are among the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, and they serve as a home to a wide range of plant and animal species," said SLCT President Harry Day, while thanking Levine for the donation. "In addition, maintaining wetlands is important in helping improve water quality and aiding water filtration in the region."
The SLCT was founded in 1972 to preserve the benefits of open space in Stamford by acquiring and managing land preserves throughout the city. The SLCT said it now protects approximately 460 acres, consisting of 47 preserves made up of 61 parcels, as well as five easements.
The SLCT is a member-supported 501(c) (3) organization funded entirely through its donors.
