FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Several students have been charged by authorities in connection with a fight that took place outside of James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg on Tuesday afternoon. The Fredericksburg Police Department said warrants for the students would be served in the coming days.
Officers with the Fredericksburg Police Deparatment responded to the high school at 2:53 p.m. for an "assault and battery in progress," authorities said in an update on Thursday. None of the involved students required medical assistance, authorities said.
"Through the investigation and with the assistance of school officials, officers identified the eight students involved in the fight," the Fredericksburg Police Department said. "Charges have been obtained for all the parties involved, four of which are adult students and four are juveniles."
After the fight, school officials decided to close the building on Wednesday and converted to asynchronous learning, according to an email sent to parents and family members.
In Wednesday's email, school officials said they decided to pivot to distance learning due to the number of students involved in the fight and "the developing information that went on through the evening and this morning."
James Monroe High School facilities were reopened on Wednesday afternoon, and students returned to classrooms on Thursday.
