HOUSTON, TX — Students staged a walk out at Houston ISD's Madison High School on Thursday morning, calling for the firing of a coach and a principal. Dozens of students can be seen outside the school in a video posted to Houston activist Gerry Monroe's Facebook page. Monroe appears to be leading the protest, using a megaphone and keeping student protestors from blocking the street and school driveway. Live in Houston? "Do you want these football coaches off this campus?" Monroe asks the crowd in the video. "And do you want the principal gone?" In the video, students mentioned firecrackers going off at the protest prior to the video being posted. The Houston Police Department responded to reports of gunshots at the school, but no gunshots were fired, reported KHOU's David Gonzalez. "It ain't nothing but firecrackers," Monroe said as a popping sound is heard on the video. Houston ISD and Madison High School did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
