Caddo Parish Public Schools: Seventeen Caddo Students Earn National Merit Semifinalist Honor

Press release from the Caddo Parish Public Schools: 2021-11-18 Caddo Parish Public Schools has been a consistent regional leader in the National Merit Scholarship Program. This school year, 17 students have earned the title as semifinalist including 13 from Caddo Parish Magnet High, three from C.E. Byrd High, and one student from Northwood High. All semifinalists took a qualifying test during their junior year by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship (PSAT/NMSQT®), in hopes of advancing to the round in the scholarship competition. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The 2021-2022 semifinalists for Caddo Schools are: 1. Jackson Ballew; C.E. Byrd High School 2. Sarah Johnson; Caddo Parish Magnet High School 10. Hannah McGuire; Caddo Parish Magnet High School 11. Ashini Modi; Caddo Parish Magnet High School 12. Abigail Nickelson; Caddo Parish Magnet High School 13. John Henry Nelson; Caddo Parish Magnet High School 14. Ruhani Sachdeva; Caddo Parish Magnet High School 15. Carson Wall; Northwood High School These academically talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million to be offered in spring 2022. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
