JERSEY CITY, NJ — Amazon has pulled the plug on an anticipated deal with Jersey City developer Mack-Cali to open an office on Jersey City's waterfront, according to Bloomberg. The possible deal was Jersey City's second chance at bringing the Fortune 500 company into the city, after a failed attempt in 2018. Jersey City was one of several cities that tried to win Amazon over in a bidding war for its "HQ2" location. The company settled on North Virginia after a messy pull-out of a potential location in Long Island City, Queens. No word on why Amazon pulled out of the deal, neither Amazon nor Mack-Cali responded to Bloomberg's request for comment. This wouldn't have been Mack-Cali's only new and highly anticipated deal at the Harborside campus — a new Whole Foods is set to open in mid-2022 and the grocer is owned by Amazon.
