CONCORD, NH — Does Instagram impact children and young adults and do them mental and physical harm? That is what New Hampshire's attorney general will set out to find out after he joined a number of other attorneys general in opening an investigating of Meta Platforms Inc., formerly known as Facebook, the parent company of Instagram. The investigation will look at the techniques used by Meta to increase the frequency and duration of engagement by its younger users and whether extended use causes harm. Meta's own internal research, according to John Formella, New Hampshire's AG, showed increased risks of physical and mental health issues with young people, including depression, eating disorders, and even suicide. "I, along with many other attorneys general, am troubled and concerned about the effects that social media platform engagement policies have on the safety and wellbeing of New Hampshire's youth," Formella said. "This multistate investigation will scrutinize Meta's business practices to determine if they put young people at risk in violation of New Hampshire law." Formella previously signed onto a letter urging Meta in May not to launch an under 13 version of Instagram. Forty-four attorneys general also signed the request. Sports Betting In October: Nearly $100M The New Hampshire Lottery said Thursday that sports betting in New Hampshire for October reached $98.1 million — an 86 percent increase over October 2020. A total of $166.2 million was bet in September and October, according to officials, while $239.3 million in wages have been placed on bets for 2021. Players won a record $92.7 million in October, too. "We are extremely pleased to see sports betting continue to build tremendous momentum as total sports wagering approached $100 million last month," Charlie McIntyre, the executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery, said. "This is exactly the kind of success we envisioned when we teamed up with DraftKings to implement a customer-centric and regulated sports betting framework in the Granite State. Our success means more revenue for our schools, which drives everything we do. Our players were also the big winners, as sports bettors had their winningest month on record in October."
