$300,000 A Month COVID Hotel Closing Because No One Is There

CHARLOTTE, NC — Mecklenburg County leased an undisclosed hotel in March of 2020 to serve as a place to quarantine unhoused residents who contracted COVID-19. According to county health director Gibbie Harris, it costs $300,000 a month to run the hotel. The location has not been announced by the county for privacy concerns. As of Tuesday, said Harris, just one person was staying in the hotel. That price includes the lease, staffing, food, security, cleaning and supplies. "So as you can see, it's not terribly cost-effective," Harris said at this week's Mecklenburg County Commission meeting. The goal is to provide homeless shelters the resources and education to be able to quarantine and help unhoused people if they contract COVID-19. It will shut down Dec. 31. Live in Charlotte?
