BERKELEY, CA — A pedestrian who was on a Berkeley freeway Sunday night for unknown reasons was fatally struck by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said. The collision, which was reported at around 6:30 p.m., occurred on the southbound lanes of I-880 between Ashby Avenue and Seventh Street, the CHP said. "Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male pedestrian lying on the roadway," the CHP said in a statement. "The pedestrian had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by Fire Department personnel." A Toyota pickup truck was traveling in the No. 1 lan‪e when it struck the adult male pedestrian, the CHP said. "The driver of the Toyota immediately stopped to help and was cooperative during the entire traffic collision investigation," the CHP said. "It was determined the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is undetermined why the pedestrian was walking in lanes of traffic and whether or not he was intoxicated at the time of the collision." The man's identity was not yet known according to the CHP. The Nos. 1 and 2 lanes of I-880 southbound were closed in the area of the crash until around 8:50 p.m. as investigators gathered evidence, the CHP said.
