Description

Traditional Christmas Eve Lessons & Carols Service with Candlelighting King’s College, Cambridge, England began its annual Lessons & Carols service on Christmas Eve in 1918, the final year of the First World War. During a time of hopelessness and fatigue, the hope surrounding the message of Christ’s birth was eagerly received. For decades this service has been a part of the season of Advent, a time when Christians prepare and equip themselves for the coming of the promised Lord and Savior. Scripture “lessons” are read from Genesis, Isaiah, and the Gospels following the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus in nine readings. The lessons are interspersed with choral and congregational singing of familiar Christmas carols and music.
