WALTHAM, MA — The Salvation Army in Waltham kicked off its annual Red Kettle campaign on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Waltham City Hall, the first Red Kettle kick-off for new Salvation Army Waltham Corps Officers Lt. Nicole Fullop and Captain Ingrid Moreno. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign provides life-changing social services and other vital programs throughout the year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the needs of those served continue to be greater than ever and the Salvation Army estimates it will need $175 million to keep Americans in their homes this holiday season, nearly 50 percent more than what was raised in 2020. "Millions of Americans face the threat of not being able to celebrate the holidays as they continue to battle the impacts of pandemic poverty," said a news release from the The Salvation Army. "Donations to the kettles allow The Salvation Army to provide life-changing social services and other programs throughout the year to meet the increasing needs of people struggling to stay in their homes." "Canceled fundraising events, closed stores, less in-person shopping, and market volatility elevate the need for public support for The Salvation Army to meet the growing need at Christmas and into 2022," it continues. " As long as resources are available, The Salvation Army will provide assistance to families in need, which includes providing Christmas gifts through the Angel Tree, putting food on the table, paying bills, and providing shelter for those without a home." Operating locally for over 135 years, The Salvation Army has relied on its Red Kettle Campaign since the 1890s to provide assistance to those in need every year. This year, the organization has already spent more than $200 million in direct financial assistance to help people stay in their homes.
