NEWTOWN, PA — Acclaimed singer-songwriter Joy Ike will perform a benefit concert for the local organization "A Love for Life," which funds research into pancreatic cancer. Ike will perform at the Newtown Theatre on Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. She has spent more than a decade of her career performing shows around the world. "Polished and precise, yet buoyed with an airy grace, Joy Ike paints with a broad palette that defies easy categorization," according to a news release from the University of Pennsylvania. "Born to Nigerian immigrants, the singer/songwriter's music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and Regina Spektor." NPR's well-known All Things Considered program reviewed Ike's work, saying that "the depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop." They call her, "a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small." A Love for Life partners with the Abramson Cancer Center at The University of Pennsylvania, funding cutting-edge research close to home in Philadelphia. A donation receipt serves as a ticket; any donation of $50 or more entitles the holder to join us at the event, along with two drink tickets and refreshments. A Love for Life requests that attendees be fully vaccinated and wear masks when not eating or drinking. The venue will be selling only 50 percent of maximum occupancy. Learn more online.
