CONCORD, NH — Tax cuts in New Hampshire's budget are being preserved after Washington attempted to keep them from occurring as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. As part of the plan, a tax mandate was issued to keep states from cutting taxes that would directly or indirectly offset any reduction in net-tax revenue. When some states cut taxes, whether the revenues were connected to the rescue funds or not, the federal government threatened to recoup the difference back from the states. Thirteen states, including New Hampshire, sued to preserve the cuts and a U.S. District Court in Alabama issued a permanent injunction against the tax mandate on Tuesday. Gov. Chris Sununu called the ruling a win for taxpayers in the Granite State. "Despite threats from Washington, we continued to cut taxes — and won," Gov. Chris Sununu said. "This decisive ruling shows NH will continue to chart our own path and will not be dictated by the mandates coming out of Washington." Mattis To Talk Civics Former Secretary of Defense Gen. James Mattis will be speaking with New Hampshire ROTC candidates, high school students, and others as part of an online lecture about the role of the military in a democracy. The talk will feature participants from sites across the state — including Fall Mountain Regional High School JROTC in Langdon, White Mountains Regional High School JROTC in Whitefield, Manchester West High School JROTC, UNH Durham ROTC, and UNH Law Veterans Law Society in Concord. "I am pleased that so many young people will participate in this conversation," Mattis said. "They are the next generation and I am eager to hear what's on their minds. I am looking forward to sharing my experience with them." The talk, which will be held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 2, is being sponsored by NH Civics, NH PBS, and the Warren B. Rudman Center at the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law. To register to watch, visit this NH Civics link online. Diabetes Awareness Month To mark National Diabetes Awareness Month, the Granite YMCA is also hosting a community health fair with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday at its Manchester location at 30 Mechanic St. Any residents can have their glucose and blood pressure screened, as well as ask questions about prediabetes warning signs, diabetes prevention and home safety. In-person programs will be offered in Goffstown, Manchester, Portsmouth, Rochester, Londonderry, Concord and Exeter, as well as a virtual option to all New Hampshire residents who cannot make it to an in-person location either due to distance or preference.
