RICHTON PARK, IL —In an attempt to reduce tickets and traffic stops, the Cook County Sheriff's Office is hosting a free event for residents needing to get their vehicle lights repaired, a spokesperson told Patch. The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of a building at 22013 Governors Highway. As of Wednesday, the event is expecting its largest turnout ever with more than 60 participants already registered. Mechanics from the sheriff's office will be on hand to fix or replace taillights, headlights and license plate lights. "These repairs help to avoid tickets, fees, and traffic stops all while improving road safety," a spokesperson for the department wrote in a statement. Members from the Cook County Sheriff's Community Engagement Team will be at the event along with Richton Township volunteers. Officials said the program is part of the department's commitment to non-traditional law enforcement programs. Free hygiene products will also be available to all Cook County residents who do not register a vehicle in need of repairs.
