Press release from the City Of Davis: October 29, 2021 10:16 am The City of Davis announced today that it will start its process and outreach for City Council redistricting that will take effect for the November 2022 election (and its associated primaries). In fall of 2019, the City converted from an at-large election system for its City Council elections to a by-district system. District boundaries will be reviewed and adjusted based on 2020 census data. Yolo County and the Davis Joint Unified School District will have their own processes for their own districts. The City will start its process with a public hearing at the Nov. 2 Council meeting followed by a public workshop on Nov. 4. The outreach schedule with meeting details is listed below. In the district election system, the City is divided into separate geographic districts. The City has five districts. Each council member is elected by the registered voters of the particular district in which the council member resides. Voters do not vote for candidates outside their districts. Redistricting ensures that each city council member represents approximately the same number of constituents. As part of the redistricting process, the City is asking for community input on individuals' "Communities of Interest." A Community of Interest (COI) is any cohesive group of people that live in a geographically definable area and should be considered as a potential voting bloc in current or future elections. Input provided will be used in the process of adjusting district boundaries based on population changes. Residents may complete the online Community of Interest form on the city website www.cityofdavis.org/districts, or pick up and drop off a hard copy to City Hall, City Manager's Office, 23 Russell Blvd. Additional opportunities for public participation are provided in a series of public hearings and a virtual workshop. The City encourages residents to participate in a public meeting and offer comments or a draft map. Comments can be emailed to [email protected]. The schedule for outreach meetings is as follows: Tuesday, Nov. 2 Public Hearing at City Council meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. Actions: Receive general input, identify communities of interest, and consider district criteria.
