Press release from the City Of Davis:
November 03, 2021 12:53 pm
The City of Davis will hold a 100-year anniversary celebration on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. for the Montgomery Bridge on Montgomery Ave. Members of the public are welcome to attend this short ceremony.
Built in 1921, this concrete pillar bridge is 52 feet in length. The bridge has wing walls, monument pillars at either end and an ornamental balustrade. It is built of reinforced concrete and has only a single span.
"We wanted to acknowledge this historic anniversary of the Montgomery Bridge to pay tribute to our City founders and its pioneer residents," said Councilmember Josh Chapman.
According to local resident Jane Garritson who was petitioning for historic status for the bridge in 1986, the bridge was named after Montgomery Road built by James Carey Montgomery in the 1850s. According to Garritson, the road was used by local children to ride horses to the local train station. Montgomery's son Alexander built a home on the east side of the road 114 years ago.
The surrounding land (about 4,200 acres) was originally acquired by Joseph B. Chiles in 1850, subsequently dividing the tract between two sons-in-law, Jerome C. Davis and Gabriel Brown.
