ROYAL OAK, MI — The City of Royal Oak will celebrate its 100th year anniversary by opening the Centennial Commons in Downtown Royal Oak, city officials said. The city has planned several events in Royal Oak's new civic center area for Thursday, Dec. 2 and Friday, Dec. 3. Activities will be held at the library, the new City Hall and police station, Farmers Market, the new Centennial Commons in downtown and the new Henry Ford Health Systems building. The celebration will also focus on what life was life in 1921, which was the year Royal Oak residents voted to make Royal Oak an official city. Live in Royal Oak? "We're really going to focus on what the city was like in 1921 and what it is like now," Royal Oak's community engagement specialist of the upcoming events Judy Davids told The Daily Tribune. The events will feature several arts and entertainment activities, such as The historic farmers market will showcasing popular entertainment from the Jazz Age. City Hall will show Charlie Chaplin's The Kid, which won Best Picture in 1921. Guests can also meet the artists of the Royal Oak Roots Mural, which are Laurie Eisenhardt and Marcia Hovland. In correlation to the 1921 theme, guests can also make vintage buttons at the Royal Oak Public Library and learn the city's history.
