Here are the top stories in Atlanta today: A DoorDash delivery driver dropping off food near Ponce City Market was shot in the back Tuesday night, according to police. The incident happened in the 700 block of Ponce de Leon Place in northeast Atlanta, across the street from the Old Fourth Ward shopping and dining destination. The victim was conscious when officers arrived around 9:20 p.m. and was taken to a hospital. An update on his condition has not been provided, no suspects have been identified and the shooting remains under investigation. Bailey was among several district employees recently honored at the APyeS! Awards for Excellence, including Forestella Taylor, who was named the APS Principal of the Year. Taylor, interim principal of Douglass High School since October, previously served as the principal of Finch Elementary School. Additionally, nine other APS award winners were honored. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)Drug trafficking charges in western North Carolina have resulted in an Atlanta man being sentenced to at least 177 months in prison. According to court records and Tuesday's sentencing hearing, Damian Lewis Furtch, 36, of Atlanta was stopped around midnight Feb. 19, 2019, by Henderson County (NC) deputies on the US-25 connector from Atlanta heading toward Asheville, NC. With the assistance of a K-9 officer, two bags of methamphetamines and digital scales were found in Furtch's vehicle, after which officials said Furtch confessed to possessing the trafficking level of drugs and told the arresting deputy he was transporting the drugs for delivery to someone in western North Carolina. (wgxa.tv)An Atlanta man authorities say bilked his insurance company of $42,524 was booked into the Fulton County Jail Monday. Tyrone Bernard Briscoe, 35, was wanted on 16 counts of forgery, insurance fraud and one count of false statements and writings charges concerning a December incident, the Georgia Insurance Commissioner said. The same day he was booked into jail, Briscoe was released on a signature bond, according to jail records. The food rescue organization - which collects healthy surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, venues, and other resources and distributes it to those in need – has a goal of delivering more than 400,000 meals to local families struggling with food insecurity.
