Quincy – Although citywide efforts have been underway the past year to deal with complications COVID has posed to the community, ongoing fundraising shortfalls have caused the Quincy Animal Shelter (QAS) to struggle with ways to provide support to the unwanted and abandoned animals in their care. QAS normally holds four to five annual fund-raising events but had to cancel all but one this past year. The last-to-adopt shelter “Underdogs” that are older and physically challenged chances for adoption are even more grim, putting more strain on the shelter. Now, more than ever, funds are needed to help provide foster homes and vulnerable "Underdogs" with critical medicine and supplies. At the QAS, Mickey's Medical Fund bolsters resources to animals in need of extraordinary medical care and funding for lifesaving procedures. “Jax, a beautiful German Shepard recently came to us with a prong collar embedded in his skin. Due to financial donations that were made to Mickey’s Medical Fund, we were able to take care of that for him and he is healing well and in a foster home while we try to find his “furever” home. Without help from Mickey's Medical Fund and support from others like Quirk Works Subaru and the Subaru of America’s Loves Pets program, we wouldn’t be able to afford adoption efforts and treatment for these helpless animals”, said Emily Duff a longtime shelter volunteer. This past month, Subaru of America and local partner Quirk Works Subaru responded to these needs and donated $3,100 in an adoption initiative that resulted in 31 animals getting adopted. The QAS is asking the community for support. Online donations, contributions to the Mickey's Medical Fund, or purchasing Amazon Smile gift cards will help provide critical services for these animals in need. The QAS is asking residents to keep them in mind for their online shopping needs by simply visiting https://smile.amazon.com/ and selecting the Quincy Animal Shelter as the supporting charity, which will provide a portion of all eligible purchases back to the shelter.
