NORTHPORT, NY — Herme and Clarisse, a bonded brother and sister around 3 years old, are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cats of the Week. Herme and Clarisse were fostered with love when they were babies with a Northport Cat Rescue volunteer, according to Lora Wild, who volunteers at the rescue. "They were loving, silly and adorable. Brother Herme, a handsome grey tabby, always looked after his sister Clarisse, a black cat with emerald, green eyes, and fur like a teddy bear. Everyone at our rescue was so excited when someone adopted the 2 kittens together. When we said 'goodbye,' we thought we had another happily ever after. However, occasionally, something goes wrong. After 3 years in a home, Herme and Clarisse were returned to our rescue." Reasons could be because of a living situation, or an illness or allergy, according to Wild. "And sometimes it's just because these beautiful cats become a burden to a family," she said. "Perhaps the cuteness of being kittens was gone for the children in the home. Whatever the case, once a Northport Cat Rescue cat, we will always welcome back our furry friends if needed." Herme and Clarisse were once silly and carefree, but came back to the cat rescue nervous and shy, according to Wild. Their loving personalities reemerged after being smothered with love and affection in a foster home. "Herme is a loving cat, who still looks after his sister," Wild said. "He can be cautious when he first meets you, but with patience, he will walk up to you and rub his whole body up against you asking for pets. He loves to eat, window watch and play with any toy that is around. Clarisse is an observer and will often be shy, but the minute you start petting her she starts to purr and rub her head into you. She gives amazing hugs too. It is almost like they forgot what it felt like to be loved, and slowly it is all coming back to them. We would love to keep these two together and get them into a patient and loving home where they belong." The duo is currently at Petco Commack in the cat rescue's habitats, where they are having a hard time, Wild said. "Imagine being in a home, then in another foster home, and now in a cage," she said. "They are scared but are waiting patiently together for someone to see the beauty they have, not only on the outside but inside as well. They both even get along with other cats! Herme and Clarisse may have a bit of a wall up around their hearts, but we have seen it start to melt with patience and love. If you are looking to add some love to your family, these two amazing cats could really use a holiday miracle. "We invite you to visit them at Petco Commack, but remember through the clear plexiglass habitats, if they do not make eye contact, it is not because they don't want to, its simply because they are scared. They just need a chance. These are two very special cats." Herme (left) and Clarisse are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cats of the Week.
