NEWTON, MA — The Jennifer Price Global Educational Leadership Fund (GELF), a local effort that provides scholarships for qualified high school students to participate in Global Education Programs, has officially established itself as an independent nonprofit organization, according to Newton Schools Foundation (NSF).
GELF began informally raising funds for Newton North and Newton South High School programs in 2014 and has provided fiscal sponsorship and administrative support from the beginning, including fiscal management, donor relations, communications, and staffing.
"Through the generosity of the Newton community and tremendous volunteer effort, GELF has grown steadily to the point where the scope of its operations merit GELF becoming an independent charitable organization," said NSF in a news release.
Although most Global Education Programs were cancelled from 2019 to 2020 due to the pandemic, GELF was prepared to provide $78,941 in scholarship funds that would have enabled 80 students to to travel internationally.
"NSF and GELF celebrate the partnership that has provided travel opportunities for many Newton students, and NSF congratulates the GELF organization and its new board of directors on achieving independent status," said the news release. "This move directly results from the tireless effort of many GELF volunteers who have grown the program through their dedication to the mission of ensuring equity in education in the Newton Pubic Schools."
