MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Mount Vernon man, so desperate to avoid arrest on an outstanding felony warrant, is accused of sending a police officer to the hospital following a brutal attack. Kevin Heron was charged with assaulting the Mount Vernon police officer who was trying to place him under arrest on November 10. The 27-year-old bit the officer and attempted to grab his service weapon, according to Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah. Heron was charged in Mount Vernon City Court with felony assault. At approximately 1:40 p.m., Heron, in an attempt to avoid being arrested on an outstanding warrant, attacked Officer Michael Hutchins at a restaurant on Gramatan Avenue, according to the felony complaint. The attack caused Officer Hutchins to fall. While he was on the ground, Heron punched Hutchins repeatedly in the face and bit his finger, causing his fingernail to fall off, police officials said. With the help of a bystander, Officer Hutchins struggled to gain control of Heron, who reached for the cop's gun and continued to fight, punch and resist arrest, even as Hutchins and his backup arrested the wanted man. Officer Hutchins was treated for his injuries at the hospital. Heron is scheduled to appear again in Mount Vernon City Court on December 7.
