Medfield's Michael McCarthy running 27th Annual Coat Drive This year Blake Middle School student Michael McCarthy is spearheading a coat drive. He has teamed up again with Coats for Kids and Anton's Cleaners to collect winter coat donations as the cold weather rolls in. Winter coats for both children and adults are gladly accepted. Coats for Kids' goal is to collect, clean, and distribute coats to those in need. The foundation started in 1995 and has collected over one million coats throughout the years, keeping those in need warm during the winter weather. Those with coats they no longer need, or have outgrown, are asked to donate them to this wonderful cause. Coats can be dropped off at Blake Middle School or at the Medfield Public Library. Donations can also be dropped off directly at Anton's Cleaners. Donations will be accepted until January 8th. This is an amazing opportunity to help those in need during an extraordinarily difficult time. Over the last few years the generous residents of Medfield have donated over 600 coats. "We hope to collect and distribute many warm coats again this year," McCarthy said. As an incentive to donate as many coats as possible, the sponsors are giving away rewards to the top three schools who collect the most coats per capita. The grand prize for the leading school is $2,500 towards their sports and after-school programs. The first, second, and third place schools will also have the opportunity to receive a generous amount for their sports and after-school programs, library books and supplies. Said McCarthy, "Not only is this an opportunity to help those in need, it also offers a chance for a great reward for our schools." Last year, due to Covid, the coat drive was held, but rewards were not distributed to schools. McCarthy would love to repeat what his older sister previously did, and to present funds to the Medfield Public Schools. McCarthy hopes that Medfield residents will be inspired to donate their extra coats and possibly earn another great reward for the Medfield Public Schools.
