WASHINGTON — Pediatric flu vaccination rates have fallen by nearly a quarter compared to last fall, renewing concerns among state health officials heading into the holiday season. The Washington State Department of Health flagged a "sharp decline" in flu shots among younger children in September and October, falling 25 percent among those between 6 months and 6 years old. Since flu activity was very low last year, which health experts partially credit to COVID-19 precautions and fewer social activities, the health department said fewer people have natural immunity from previous exposure. "Flu can be serious for kids, and a flu vaccine is the best way to protect them," said Dr. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, the chief science officer at DOH. "With the holidays quickly approaching, it is crucial parents take precautionary steps now to keep everyone in the family healthy and safe. A flu vaccine is especially important this year due to the potential dangers of both flu and COVID-19 circulating at the same time." Flu seasons are often unpredictable, including the timing and severity of their peaks, but activity is often highest between December and February, officials said. While kids in the age groups of concern are not currently eligible for COVID-19 shots, state health officials note flu shots are both approved and recommended for people of all ages, except infants under six months old. "We are concerned that our youngest children remain vulnerable to both flu and COVID-19 illness," said Dr. Umair Shah, state Secretary of Health. "Although the COVID-19 vaccine is not yet available for kids 4 and under, the flu vaccine is. As parents, we want to do everything in our power to protect our children — and vaccination is an important tool that's available to every family in Washington." Like in previous years, flu vaccines are available at most pharmacies or through clinics and primary care providers. Families with children old enough to get a COVID-19 vaccine can also choose to get both shots on the same day, along with other routine vaccines, officials said. More information on this year's flu season is available on the DOH website.
