Description
NEWTOWN, CT — Infowars host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was found guilty by default of defamation Monday in connection with lawsuits filed by families of victims in the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting, reported The New York Times and other media outlets.
Judge Barbara Bellis issued the guilty verdict because Jones and Infowars failed to turn over materials he was ordered to by the court. Among the documents the court ordered Jones to turn over were financial records to show whether Infowars profited from Jones's reports about the mass shooting, wrote WTRF-TV.
Jones had previously called the shooting a hoax, but years later he finally acknowledged that it occurred. Twenty students and six educators at the elementary school were killed by a lone gunman in December 2012.
Monday's guilty verdict follows a similar result over cases filed by families in Texas court, and now the courts will determine the damages Jones will have to pay.
