Here are the top stories in Burlington today: There was a heated debate Monday night at Burlington's City Council meeting over whether to reopen the Sears Lane homeless encampment. The resolution failed to pass on a 6-5 vote. The measure was to make sure the city has a plan when the 28-day emergency housing ends for people who moved out of Sears Lane. It also calls for exploring the possibility of building 17 tiny homes on the site. (WCAX)"Highlight," Burlington's annual New Year's Eve celebration, will take a hybrid approach this year. In-person attendees looking for entertainment and activities can bring children to a kid-friendly festival at Waterfront Park or attend one of several live shows. Virtual attendees can watch a musical comedy duo or a circus performance. (Burlington Free Press)The City of South Burlington's two dozen school bus drivers and monitors this morning overwhelmingly voted to join the South Burlington Educators' Association, marking a trend in which workers across Vermont and the nation are seeking to boost their collective power.(Vermont Biz) A UVM student received $100,000 from an anonymous donor to build a statue to honor indigenous people. (Vermont Cynic)Mayor Miro Weinberger is calling on the City Council to make a decision on filling the open spot for police chief, presenting them two options: create the necessary conditions in the department to attract top candidates, or to seriously consider two strong applicants in the current pool.
