Description
TOMS RIVER, NJ — The 2021 election campaign culminates when voters go to the polls Nov. 2 to choose Toms River Township Council members. Each of the four ward seats are up for election. There are two candidates seeking each ward seat, which is a four-year term. Patch asked each candidate to answer questions to give voters information about who they are and their stances on various issues. We are printing their responses in full, unedited except for spelling or punctuation. Here are the answers from Daniel Rodrick, who is running for Ward 2. Age: 45 Town of residence: Toms River Position sought: Ward 2 Council Party affiliation: Republican Family: My wife and I have two children who both attend Toms River Schools. Education: BS in Geology & Environmental Science & MA in Administration Occupation: Science Teacher for 21 years Previous elective office, if any: Current Ward 2 Councilman Do you or anyone in your family work for the state, county or local governments? My wife and I are both public school teachers in Monmouth County. Why are you seeking office? Mayor Hill is giving the farm away and someone needs to keep an eye on the store. As the only voice of opposition on Town Council, I'm asking voters to send me back to keep them honest. What do you feel is the most pressing issue facing the community, and what do you want to do about it? Overdevelopment, commercial activity in our residential neighborhoods, and escalating property taxes are the three biggest issues impacting quality of life for Toms River residents. What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking to serve? Since being elected, I have opposed all new high-density, multifamily development; including a redevelopment plan that now permits the construction of 12-story buildings and private schools throughout downtown Toms River . Additionally, I was the only member of Town Council who had the courage to vote no when Mayor Hill cut the acreage requirement for houses of worship from 10 acres to just 2 acres. I've never voted to increase taxes, voted against millions in waste, and exposed corruption in Town Hall. I'm asking that you re-elect me and I promise to keep fighting for our town and its future. Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform. See Above and below What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you will be effective in office? I cite my voting record as evidence that residents can count on me to be steadfast in my beliefs, and dedicated to the preservation of our local neighborhoods, open space, and our quality of life. My voting record demonstrates that residents can consistently count on me to represent their interests — not the special interests. What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions? No answer provided.
