MUNHALL, PA — The WPIAL has launched an investigation into racist comments allegedly made during last weekend's high school football game between Steel Valley and South Side Beaver. The game also was marred by a season-ending injury to Steel Valley star running back Nijhay Burt that his parents claim was intentional.
Steel Valley Superintendent Edward Weher conducted his own probe of the incidents purportedly committed by South Side Beaver last week and presented his findings to the WPIAL on Monday, KDKA-TV reported. The WPIAL confirmed an inquiry is under way.
Burt, the WPIAL's leading rusher, suffered a broken ankle during the first quarter of the game. His parents told KDKA and WPXI-TV that he said he was intentionally injured and South Side Beaver players were using a racial epithet and also calling Steel Valley players "monkeys" during the game.
Steel Valley won the game and advanced to the WPIAL semifinals against Beaver Falls on Friday.
