Description
Press release from the City of Oak Forest:
October 19, 2021
Beginning October 24, Illinois residents will be required to dial 10 digits (1 plus the 10-digit phone number) when making calls to the 309, 618 and 708 area codes. Oak Forest residents will need to dial the 708 area code even if they are trying to reach a number within the same area code.
This change is a result of the Federal Communications Commission adopting an order approving 988 as the three-digit abbreviated dialing code to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. Callers must continue to dial (800) 273-8255 to reach the Lifeline until then.
